Understanding Japanese Pokémon Product Variations: Boxes, Packs & What They Really Mean
When buying Pokémon TCG products from Japan, you’ll often see terms like shrinked box, unshrinked box, untabbed box, PCJ packs, and loose packs.
These variations exist because of how products are handled, displayed, and sold across different retailers in Japan and each variation has different pricing, expectations, and collector confidence levels.
Buying Japanese Pokémon TCG products can get confusing with the different terms as stated above
This guide explains the differences clearly so buyers know exactly what they’re getting.
1. Booster Boxes (3 Variations)
A. Shrinked Booster Box (Fully Sealed)

What it is:
A booster box that still has the original factory plastic shrink-wrap around it.
Key Points:
✔️ Hits are guaranteed (Japan boxes normally have a secret rare + structured hits)
✔️ Most desirable for collectors and sealed investors
✔️ Most expensive due to authenticity assurance
🔒 Hardest to tamper with
Why it costs more:
Collectors value original shrink-wrap as a safety layer which also means no resealing, no touching, no tampering.
B. Unshrinked Booster Box (No Plastic, Box Still Tabbed and Closed)
What it is:
Same booster box, just without the factory shrink wrap.
This is common in Japan because many retailers remove plastic to prevent reselling.
Key Points:
✔️ Hits are still guaranteed
💵 Cheaper than shrinked boxes
🔍 Typically untouched internally
🏪 Removed by retailers to stop scalpers from bulk-buying
Why it exists:
Shops remove shrink-wrap to prevent customers from flipping boxes immediately at inflated prices.
C. Unshrinked & Untabbed Booster Box (No Plastic, Box Tab Open
What it is:
No shrink-wrap and the box's security flap (“tab”) has been opened.
Key Points:
✔️ Hits still guaranteed
💸 Cheapest option among the three
🏪 Common for display units or anti-resale control
🧩 Still fully factory-packed inside
Why shops open the tab:
To make the product non-resellable as “sealed,” but the packs inside remain untouched and in factory condition.
** IF you purchased from sellers and the number of hits do not tally or the main box hit did not appear, you SHOULD request for a refund because it is definitely tampered with. This variation is the riskiest among the different variation of boxes.
2. Packs (Loose Packs vs PCJ Packs)
A. Loose Packs (From Booster Box)

What it is:
Individual packs pulled out from a normal booster box.
Key Points:
🎁 Hits are random
❌ Hits NOT guaranteed because you're not buying a full box
💥 There will be hits in the batch but not guaranteed per purchase
💰 Most expensive pack option (due to highest risk/reward)
Why the price is higher:
Buyers are essentially chasing hits in the batch because there definitely will be hits as it came from booster boxes
B. PCJ Packs (Yellow Bag – Pokémon Center Japan)

What it is:
Loose packs sold inside official Pokémon Center Japan yellow bags.
Once the tape is torn, the bag rips making tampering very difficult.
Key Points:
🎁 Hits not guaranteed
🟡 Comes with iconic “PCJ Yellow Bag”
🔒 Hard to reseal or manipulate
🛒 Sold directly at Pokémon Center Japan stores
🧩 Packs inside are truly random (PCJ staff remove them from boxes infront of customer and pack them directly into the yellow bags)
Why collectors like them:
The bag adds trust and novelty and confirms it's from an official PCJ store.
C. PCJ (General) Packs (Convenience Stores / Retailers)

What it is:
Loose packs purchased from Japanese retailers such as:
AEON
FamilyMart / 7-Eleven
Yodobashi Camera
Bic Camera
Loft / Don Quijote
Department stores
These packs are normally displayed individually at the counter.
Key Points:
🎁 Hits not guaranteed
📦 Sourced from legitimate Japanese retail outlets
🔀 Packs come completely random
💵 Usually cheaper than yellow-bag PCJ packs
Why they exist:
Many Japanese stores sell Pokémon packs individually, not in box form. This is perfect for casual buyers.
???!!? SUSPICIOUS LOOSE PACKS??!?!
There are also loose packs that are from unknown sources and are generally the cheapest option. Always do your due diligence when purchasing and make sure that sellers are legitimate and preferably, have a track record.

Why Do Retailers Unshrink or Untab Boxes in Japan?
A very common reason:
→ To prevent reselling and scalping.
Japan has strict anti-scalping practices.
Retailers often:
Remove shrink wrap (Unshrinked boxes)
Open the tabs (Untabbed boxes)
Limit quantity per customer (Hence how loose packs and PCJ come about)
This helps to ensure that genuine collectors and kids can get their hands on the products.
Which Variation Should You Buy? (In Summary)
For sealed collectors:
➡️ Shrinked box
For cheaper box ripping but guaranteed hits:
➡️ Unshrinked or untabbed boxes
For pack collectors / casual ripping:
➡️ PCJ general packs
For trust and authenticity from Pokémon Center:
➡️ PCJ yellow bags
For maximum excitement:
➡️ Loose packs (from booster box)
